Folder Identity and Content Changes
An automatic folder is identified by the object behind it, never by its name — which is why renaming a page renames its folder instead of creating a second one.
On this page
An automatic folder is identified by the WordPress object behind it, recorded in term meta — not by its name. Almost every useful behaviour on this page follows from that one decision.
What happens when content changes
| Event | Result |
|---|---|
Page slug about-us → our-company |
The same folder is renamed. |
| Category re-slugged | The same folder is renamed. |
| Category moved under a different parent | The same folder branch is reparented. |
| Post moved to another category | The same folder moves; the emptied category folder is pruned. |
| Post trashed | Its folder is removed. |
| Trashed post restored | Its folder is rebuilt. |
| Post deleted permanently | Its folder is removed. Every attachment stays. |
| Category deleted | Its folder is removed and its posts are refiled — see the limit below. |
| Attachment deleted | Its folder relationships go with it. |
Trashing is reversible for free
Trashing a page deletes its automatic folder; restoring the page rebuilds it. Recovery costs nothing because the folder is fully derivable from the content — there is no state to lose.
Emptied folders are pruned
When a category or a root folder ends up with nothing in it, MediaFlow removes it. A post that changes category does not leave an empty folder behind.
When updates happen
Editing one page rescans one page. MediaFlow hooks a deliberately small set of events, and a per-request guard means several hooks firing for one save result in a single scan.
Nothing runs for revisions, autosaves, imports, attachments, post types you have not selected, or triggers you have switched off.
The 200-post limit on term deletion
Deleting a term refiles its posts inline, up to 200 of them. Above that, MediaFlow records a “run a full refresh” notice instead of doing half the work and leaving the rest inconsistent.
If you see that notice, go to Media → MediaFlow → Settings and press Refresh now — see Running a refresh.
Posts in several categories
A post in more than one category needs a rule. You choose it on the settings screen:
- Use the primary category, falling back to the first. A primary category set by Yoast SEO or Rank Math is used when present — neither plugin is required.
- Use the first category.
- Show it under every category.
See the Settings reference.
