Settings Reference
Every option on Media → MediaFlow → Settings, what it changes, and which ones need a refresh afterwards — plus what lives on the Tools tab.
On this page
Media → MediaFlow has three tabs:
| Tab | What is on it |
|---|---|
| Settings | Automatic organization, under the heading Auto Optimize Organization, plus the uninstall option |
| Tools | Files with no known usage, duplicate files and the folder importers |
| License | Licence key, status and activation |
This page covers the Settings tab.
The options
| Setting | Effect |
|---|---|
| Enable automatic organization | The master switch. Off by default. |
| Content types | Which post types build folders. Public types only. |
| Group by (per type) | How that type’s folders are grouped. See below. |
| Content in several categories | Where a post with more than one category is filed. |
| Automatic refresh | Whether saves, term changes and media deletions update organization as they happen. |
| Uninstall | Whether deleting the plugin also deletes folders and settings. Off by default. |
Before you switch anything on
A fresh install offers a See what MediaFlow finds card with a Scan my library button. It reads your pages, posts and products and reports what uses each file — and it changes nothing: no folder is created and no file is touched. That is why it runs without a licence. Not now dismisses it.
On an unlicensed site the Settings tab instead explains that Automatic organization is part of Pro, and links to the License tab. Your own folders keep working either way.
Content types
Only public post types are offered. attachment, revisions, menu items, blocks
and template parts are never listed — folders built from those would be noise.
Group by
Each selected post type gets its own Group by control:
| Choice | What it does |
|---|---|
| Automatic | MediaFlow picks the type’s conventional hierarchical taxonomy. |
| No grouping | One folder per item, directly under the post type’s root. |
| A named taxonomy | Groups by that taxonomy — categories for posts, product categories for products. |
Pages normally use No grouping, which is why pages/about-us has no middle
level while posts/software-development/my-guide does.
Content in several categories
- Use the primary category (falls back to the first). A primary category set by Yoast SEO or Rank Math is used when present — neither plugin is required.
- Use the first category.
- Show it under every category.
The strategy is decided by this setting, not by how many categories a given post happens to have, which keeps folder identity stable.
Automatic refresh
Controls whether MediaFlow keeps up as content changes: when content is saved, when terms change, and when media is deleted.
Uninstall
Off by default. Leave it off and uninstalling MediaFlow leaves your folders and settings in the database, so reinstalling picks up where you left off. Tick it only if you want a clean removal.
Your media files are never deleted either way.
Changes need a refresh
Developer overrides
Several of these can be steered in code — which post types are offered, which taxonomy a type is grouped by, what a root folder is called, and which term a post is filed under. See Filters and hooks.
