SMS Verification
SMS verification is a two-factor method that sends the one-time login code to the customer's phone by text message, instead of (or in addition to) email.

What this does
It’s an alternative delivery channel for two‑factor codes. Some customers prefer a text over an email, and SMS can be faster and harder to intercept than an inbox.
Why it exists: to give customers a convenient, mobile‑first second factor and to offer choice alongside email verification.
This page builds on Two‑Factor Authentication — set that up first.
How it works
- The customer adds and verifies their phone number in the dashboard’s Security section.
- When 2FA is required at login, the one‑time code is sent by SMS to that number.
- The customer enters the code to complete sign‑in.
If a customer has both email and SMS available, their primary method is used first, with the other as a backup.
How to set it up
Step 1 — Enable 2FA. In Settings → Security, turn on 2‑Step Verification (see Two‑Factor Authentication).
Step 2 — Make SMS available. Ensure SMS delivery is configured for your store per your plan.
Step 3 — Customers add their phone. In their dashboard Security section, customers enter and verify a phone number to receive codes by text.
Tips & Best Practices
-
Offer both email and SMS. Letting customers choose improves adoption and provides a fallback if one channel fails.
-
Encourage recovery codes too. Phones get lost or numbers change — Recovery Codes prevent lockouts.
-
Verify the number. Customers should confirm their phone so codes reach the right device.
-
Keep messages short and clear so the code is easy to spot.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is SMS verification available on the Free plan?
No — it’s a Pro security feature and part of the higher‑tier security options.
Do customers need to use SMS, or can they use email?
Email is the core method; SMS is an additional option. Customers can use whichever is available and set as their primary.
What if a customer changes phone numbers?
They update and re‑verify the new number in their dashboard Security section.
What happens if an SMS doesn’t arrive?
They can resend after the cooldown, switch to email (if enabled), or use a recovery code.
Does SMS cost anything?
SMS delivery depends on your store’s configuration and plan. Email verification has no per‑message cost.
Is SMS more secure than email?
Both add strong protection. SMS can be faster; the best setup offers both plus recovery codes.
